I prefer an 'empty bed ' look (when everything else is equal), and when I learned (for a fact) that Lipper warranties their frames when a Goose Box is employed, I jumped that direction.įor better or worse, I will let y'all know the results. The downside is the enormous weight of the unit + the space in the bed it occupies. I had absolutely zero issues with the Companion Slider. No doubt that is a SOLID, well-built unit. On my last truck, a 2015 2500 dMax, my most recent hitch was a B&W Companion Slider. Believe me, I've heard of the gooseneck issues [pertaining to towing and frame issues), but I have not experienced those issues, personally. After the HR, we had an Open Range where gooseneck or 5th wheel tow was OEM. For years & years I pulled a 40' Holiday Rambler (HR) that was converted to gooseneck and I had no issue, whatsoever, with frame twisting/cracking (I realize results vary, but I contend a lot is due to 'user error'). I have done both gooseneck and 5th wheel towing. The Goose Box was tested extensively in order to achieve Lippert's stamp of approval (and to my knowledge, Goose Box is the only conversion-type pin box to receive such approval). Respectfully, it seems to me there's no way that Lippert is going to jeopardize their frame(s) just so Goose Box can pedal some product. Why would Lippert extend and approve warranty to & of their frames if Goose Box exerted such stress? We've all heard the gooseneck vs 5th wheel comparisons and while a lot of that info seems logical, I have to ask this: On this particular topic, I believe there is some 'urban legend' mixed-in. Whether an adapter will work depends on the configuration of the front end of the fiver as much as truckbed length.I hear what you're saying. Gooseneck trailers are not configured the same as fivers, and your gooseneck ball is located for a gooseneck trailer. FWIW, one of the members with a gooseneck adapter on a CarriLite fiver knocked out the rear window of his truck, even with an 8 foot bed. Not necessarily, most of the fivers in our club are pulled by crew cabs with 6.5 foot beds, they just have the appropriate fifth wheel hitch. Taller pickups are the latest styling thing, you can get lower ones but they are usually work trucks stylistically. So, if shopping for a new TV with towing a fiver in mind, should you focus on the 8 foot bed and forgrt the shortbed? Because too much height at the pin can make a fiver pull badly, I know some fiver owners who raise their whole fiver too clear their too-tall pickup. The ONLY proven solution for fifth wheel trailer towing with short bed trucks is the SuperGlide hitch - automatically sliding the trailer away from the cab w. You also might find different lengths in different brands and models of gooseneck adapters, and there should be height adjustment in the pinbox. The towability, spacious interior, and luxury features of the Reflection 150 Series are redefining what it means to be half-ton towable. Pullrite slide automatically, based on angle of trailer to truck.įifthwheel hitches come in, or adjust to, different heights for siderail clearance. With floorplans starting under 7,000 pounds and 90-degree turning radius capabilities, you can tow in confidence with many of today’s half-ton and short bed trucks. Plus the hitch itself has 2 positions for longbed or shortbed trucks. This part can be rotated front to rear to adapt it to extended or non extended kingpins. The pinbox part has 2, 1 1/16 bolts that attach it to the kingping and 4 6 allen set screws. Remove the ground side foil from around this hole with a 1/4' drill to avoid shorting +5 v to ground when the resistor lead is inserted. The hitch tripod part only has the 4 pins that pin it in, and 1 pin for ball height adjustment. Drill a new hole through this trace in the place where it is close to pin 1. That means fifthwheel hitch, not gooseneck. Locate the +5 volt trace that passes between pin 1 and pin 2 of the PIC socket. To deal with a shortbed, you may need a slider, to move the hitchpoint back on tight turns.
